Americans are starting to Love Indonesian Palm Oil

Indonesian palm oil is beginning to receive greater attention from the global market, including from consumers in the United States. This shift in preferences is seen as opening new opportunities for Indonesian vegetable oil products to expand their export markets.
Hendratmojo Bagus Hudoro, Director of Plantation Protection at the Directorate General of Plantations at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, stated that there are indications of a shift in vegetable oil consumption in the US, with palm oil becoming more prominent.

He believes this trend presents a significant opportunity for Indonesia, one of the world’s largest palm oil producers.

“There’s been a consumer shift in the United States. Those who previously used more non-palm oil are now starting to switch to palm oil,” Bagus said during the Palm Oil Equivalent discussion at the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday (March 2, 2026).

This shift in preferences is inseparable from the global market’s need for more efficient and competitive vegetable oils.

“If we compare productivity and land efficiency, palm oil does have significant advantages over other vegetable oils,” he said.

In addition to changing consumption patterns, the government also sees opportunities in trade policies that can open wider market access to the US.

“Now there are new opportunities related to import tariffs that can reach 0%. This is certainly an opportunity that must be seized,” said Hendratmojo.

This momentum could be a gateway for Indonesian palm oil products to strengthen their position in the global market. The US market has a significant influence on the direction of global consumption because many other countries follow the growing trend there.

“If America starts to make palm oil one of its primary choices, usually other countries that are its partners or allies will also follow suit,” he said.

Besides the US, demand for Indonesian palm oil also remains strong from major countries such as India and China, which have long been its main export markets. A number of countries’ dependence on Indonesian palm oil supplies remains quite high.

“India and China are still highly dependent on palm oil supplies from Indonesia,” he said.

He believes that global geopolitical conditions and changing trade dynamics could also open up new opportunities for the expansion of Indonesian palm oil exports.

“Amidst the uncertain global situation, we must seize every opportunity, no matter how small, to strengthen the position of our commodity,” he said.

He also hopes that the opportunities in the US market can be maximized by national palm oil industry players.

“If we can seize this opportunity well, it will certainly have a positive impact on Indonesian palm oil exports and the welfare of domestic farmers,” he said.
